NEW vs. OLD Antenna

NEW ANTENNA

vs.

OLD ANTENNA

In 2020, I moved my 80m OCFD antenna from its  location near the house to a location behind and above the house.

Actually I built and installed a new antenna and had them both erected for about one month. This gave me the opportunity to compare their performance.

PURPOSE OF THE MOVE:

  • Although I had a relatively low noise level with the antenna near the house (i.e., about S2 on all bands except 30m which was S5), I suspected I would have a lower noise level with the antenna located farther away from the house.

  • At its old location, I suspected the near proximity of the house might be affecting the ability of my signal to clear the mountain behind the house, which was between my house and Stateside as well as JA.

NOISE LEVEL:

  • ALL bands typically have a noise level of S0 to maximum S1.

  • This is 5 S-Units lower noise on 30m and 1 to 2 S-Units lower noise on all other bands.

SIGNAL STRENGTH OF OTHER STATIONS:

  • See the GALLERY below for the results on the different HF Bands:
  • ( Click on 80m (top left) and then scroll with  > )

IN GENERAL:

  • Most received signals were 2 S-Units stronger with the new antenna.
  • The noise level was 2 S-Units lower with the new antenna.
  • Total Signal/Noise improvement was 4 S-Units with the new antenna!

BOTTOM LINE:  This was a significant improvement to my antenna system!
