404-ROK

404-ROK Videos:

The following videos were made to investigate the behavior of the Spiderbeam fiberglass poles when mounted horizontally supporting the 404-ROK.

I wanted to see how much these poles bend under the weight of the 404-ROK when configured as shown at the bottom of this page:  https://www.aerial-51.com/404-rok/

In order to simulate the configuration, I used a step-ladder.   The base of the pole was approximately 1.5m high.

At first I mounted the pole horizontally, but due to the conic shape of the pole, it ended up sloping down.  The result was, the tip of the 10m mini pole was touching the ground, even without an antenna mounted onto it.

In this first video, the short leg of the 404-ROK is spiraled horizontal along the full length of the pole.  Because the antenna is so lightweight and the feedpoint was mounted close to the base of the pole, this made very little difference to the bending of the pole.

404-ROK on a Spiderbeam telescoping fiberglass 10m Mini-Pole:

The following two videos show the antenna - albeit, the long leg of the antenna is wound up in a coil and weighted down by a 2 oz. fishing weight:

The following short video shows the far end of the pole.  It is about 2.5m above the ground.  When the pole was mounted horizontally and not tilting upwards slightly, the far end was touching the ground.

I replaced the 10m Mini-Pole with a Spidderbeam 12m fiberglass pole, with its top segment removed, shortening it to 11m, and then pushed the two top segment back inside of the others to shorten it to 9m - one meter shorter than the 10m Mini-Pole.

Notice in the opening photo, I had to add weight to the back-side of the ladder.  Without it, the ladder tipped over due to the weight of the 12m pole.  This was not necessary with the 10m Mini-Pole.:

I was a bit surprised in these results.  The Spiderbeam 12m fiberglass pole shortened to 9 meters (as shown here) seems to sag just as much as the fully extended Spiderbeam 10m Mini-Pole.

CONCLUSION:

The new Spiderbeam 10m Mini-Pole is an excellent addition to the family of Spiderbeam's lightweight telescoping poles.  It is rugged and very sturdy, despite its small transport-size.
