Chapter 2: A Brief History of Windom and OCFD Antennas

OCFD eBook:  Practical Tips for Building OCFD Antennas

A practical guide to building an Off-Center-Fed Dipole antenna for your QTH.

Chapter 2:  A Brief History of Windom to OCFD

The terms "Windom" and "Off-Center-Fed Dipole" ("OCFD") are often used to denote any dipole antenna that is fed somewhere between the center of the antenna and either end.  However, they are actually two different antennas.  The original Windom was a single-wire fed half-wavelength (Hertz) antenna.  The OCFD is a dual -wire fed half-wavelength dipole, and may be fed with either openwire (i.e., Ladder-Line, Window-Line, or Twinlead) or with coax cable.

In the meantime, the antenna which began life as the Windom is nearly 100 years old.

A lot has changed since its introduction.  This chapter highlights the origin of the Windom as well as the important milestones along its journey to becoming the Off-Center-Fed Dipole.
