ATU RANKING BY BAND

IMPORTANT:

  • It was rare that the current in each line was equal and balanced so I used the "Average Current" of the two amounts of current for calculations

  • Since I cannot measure the output power from each of the ATU's into the feedline, I have set the best ATU in each band to "100" then show the other tuners as a ratio of Output Power to the top ATU.  I used the formula "I sq. x R" for calculating this, where "R" is the Resistive component of the complex impedance "Z".

So for the MFJ-974B on 80m, I calculated (1.44 x 1.44) / (1.545 x 1.545) x 100 = 86.9% .

On 80m, the two Unbalanced ATUs performed better than the 4 Balanced ATUs.

ALL ATUs had relatively good balance on this band.  (< 10%) Not so on higher bands!

The ANNECKE with the Cap Mod had the most loss.  This was to be expected as the caps have only 60 pF each.

Correct both MFJ's  ---->

The antenna is nearly a full-size halfwave dipole on 40m.  The EZEE MATCH was best.

The first four ATUs had relatively good performance.  Surprisingly, the ANNECKE both with and without the Cap Mod had very poor performance.

Surprisingly, the little MFJ-901 had the best balance: 180 degrees!

Although the EZEE MATCH delivered the most current to the feedline, it's balance was the worst of the pack.

Although the stock ANNECKE delivered more current to the feedline, its balance was much better with the Cap Mod.

The two unbalanced ATUs were at the bottom of the pack.  Their balance was also poor.

Again the MFJ-974B and EZEE MATACH are at the top of the list.  The MFJ had more current, the EZEE Match had better balance.

The ANNECKE (No Mod) was not bad, the MFJ-901 had very performance.

CORRECT THE ANNECKES --->

Surprisingly, the MFJ-901 was nearly as good as the EZEE MATCH!

The MFJ-974B and the TEN-TEC were perfectly balanced and had relatively high performance.

Again the ANNECKE was "curious".  With the cap mode it had a perfect balance, but not nearly as much current as without the cap mod.

Although the MFJ-974B and EZEE MATCH were on top again, they had horrible balance.  ALL tuners had horrible balance on this band.

With the Cap Mod, the ANNECKE had more current than without the MOD, but the balance was worse than horrible!

The TEN-TEC had poor performance and the MJF-901 could not even find a match.

The EZEE MATCH is again on top, followed closely by the MFJ-974B, with the ANNECK with Cap Mod about 20% behind.

The TEN-TEC had the best balance; and the ANNECKE without the Cap Mod by far the worst balance.

Again the MFJ-901 could find no match.

The EZEE MATCH and MFJ-974B were on top (trading places) on all bands except 80m.

The ANNECKEs were 10 and 30% behind with the one with the Cap Mod having the better balance.

Though the TEN-TEC had good balance, it was pretty low on current.  The MFJ-901 again found no match.
