Chapter 1: The Search for a Multi-Band Antenna

OCFD eBook:  Practical Tips for Building OCFD Antennas

A practical guide to building an Off-Center-Fed Dipole antenna for your QTH.

Chapter 1:  The Search for a Multi-Band Antenna

Few ham radio operators have the space for a well-equipped antenna farm.  Indeed, most of us are lucky if we are able to erect just one good antenna on our property.   As a result, there is a strong demand for antennas which work as many bands as possible.

There are several multi-band antennas to choose from.  Each has its own strengths and weaknesses.  Which one each of us chooses depends on our own unique set of criteria.

The Multi-Band Antenna Candidates:

  • The Morgain antenna
  • The G5RV and ZS6BKV antenna
  • The Fan Dipole
  • The End-Fed antenna (random-non-resonant length and half-wavelength)
  • The Trap Dipole
  • The W3DZZ antenna
  • The Openwire Fed Dipole / (Doublet) antenna
  • The Off-Center-Fed Dipole ("OCFD"; sometimes called "Windom") antenna
  • The Off-Center-Fed Current-Sums Antenna (OCF-CSA)

This chapter takes a brief look at each of these antennas and highlights and introduces the Current-Sums Antenna (CSA), which will be explained in detail in the rest of this book.
